Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing financial assistance to the Coast Guard community. Coast Guard Mutual Assistance is governed by the Board of Control located at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, and administered by CGMA Headquarters staff, by Regional Directors in various CGMA regions throughout the country, and by Representatives at selected duty stations.
On an average work day in 2006 CGMA Representatives provided $22,000 of assistance in 24 cases to members of the Coast Guard family.
CGMA provided $5.8 million in assistance to more than 6,500 individuals in 2006. This included:
o $4.18 million in interest-free loans to 2,953 recipients
o $1.2 million in Personal Grants to 348 recipients (primarily Katrina victims)
o $446,900 in Supplemental Education Grants and Education Loan Origination Fee Reimbursements to 3330 recipients
During the last five years, CGMA provided over $28.4 million in interest-free loans, almost $1.4 million in personal grants, and over $1.7 million in Supplemental Education Grants and Education Loan Origination Fee reimbursements, for a total of over $31.5 million in assistance.
86% of the assistance provided went to E-6/GS-7 and below.
Over 21,000 active duty, retired, and civilian individuals annually contribute to CGMA by allotment.
