Supplemental Student Loans
General Information
CGMA will loan eligible clients up to $700 if a demonstrated financial need remains after they receive the maximum assistance authorized under the Coast Guard Tuition Assistance (CGTA) Program.

Eligibility Requirements
Any Coast Guard Active Duty, Selected Reserve or Civilian Employee who is eligible to participate in the CGTA Program may participate in this Program.
Eligibility does not extend to CGMA clients who are currently delinquent in repaying any CGMA loan or who appear on the CGMA Restricted List.

Tuition and other expenses authorized in COMDTINST 1500.24 (series) may be considered for assistance under this Program. ![]()
The loan amount cannot exceed the difference between the total amount the client paid and the amount of CGTA received. ![]()
The loan must normally be repaid prior to completing the course for which it was provided. ![]()
New Supplemental Student Loans will not be provided until any previous such loans have been repaid. ![]()
An individual who, though otherwise eligible, receives no CGTA due solely to a lack of Coast Guard funding or a temporary policy decision concerning CGTA may, with proper documentation from the Coast Guard Institute, be provided assistance under this program. ![]()
Prospective Academy Cadets may be required to pay a "tuition fee" prior to attending the Coast Guard Academy. CGMA funds are not intended for this purpose. Individuals who are having difficulty paying this fee should contact the Director of Admissions at the Coast Guard Academy for assistance. Requests for assistance under this program must be submitted to your nearest CGMA Representative no later than 30 days after the course begins. ![]()
Individuals receiving assistance under this program may also be eligible for assistance under other CGMA Education Programs.
Application Procedures
step 1 Complete all sections of the CGMA Application for Assistance (CGMA Form 5)*
Indicate "Supplemental Student Loan Program" in the Reason for Request box.* Note: This form is Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, you may download it free by clicking here Get Adobe Acrobat Reader.

step 2 Attach the following documents:
A copy of the signed Tuition Assistance Authorization Form, CGI Form 1560, issued by the the Coast Guard Institute; or
A copy of documentation to indicate the Coast Guard has temporarily suspended the Coast Guard Tuition Assistance Program; and
A clear copy of the front and back of the client’s valid Coast Guard ID card (both sides, clearly visible).
step 3 Make a photocopy for your records and forward the original application and supporting documentation to your nearest CGMA Representative
After ensuring the loan application and attachments are complete, the CGMA Representative will process the request and issue a check to the client for the proper amount.
